Circulating Water PCCP Repair

Circulating Water PCCP Repair

Project Highlights

  • 800 linear feet of a 10′-diameter PCCP was strengthened with CFRP.
  • 27,000 square feet of a specially designed carbon fabric was used. This allowed the pipe to be strengthened with only a single layer of fabric.
  • All equipment was re-designed so that it could fit into the pipe through the 30-inch diameter manhole.
  • Strengthening was completed ahead of schedule.

The Project In Pictures

The Problem

Half of the pre-stressing steel wires necessary to handle internal pressure of the pipe had corroded and snapped. This resulted in cracking and structural degradation to the PCCP. Over 800 linear feet of pipe required repair.

The Fix

Next completed surface preparation with abrasive blast, repaired damage to inner layer of concrete, installed two layers of CFRP, accelerated the cure, and completed termination details to ensure a long-lasting repair.

The Result

The repair was competed on 800 linear feet of 10-foot diameter PCCP during a planned 10-day outage. Carbon fiber provided sufficient hoop strength to withstand the internal pipe pressures.

Approximate cost savings: 50% over replacement of PCCP.
